'Take Shelter': Family man braces for worst — 3 1/2 stars
When Michael Shannon scans a horizon for spectral wonders portending the end of the world, boardwalk empire season 1 dvd (http://www.boardwalkempiredvd.us) the actor — familiar to Chicagoans for his many stage roles here, and to TV audiences for his portrayal of the self-flagellating revenue agent on "Boardwalk Empire" — doesn't have to twist our arm to let us see what his character sees.boardwalk empire dvd (http://www.boardwalkempiredvd.us)
Whatever his characters are watching, whether it's digital apocalyptic imagery or simply a piece of business cooked up by a fellow actor, becomes real in his eyes and dramatically vivid to our own.
Shannon has become an increasingly valuable character actor and, like a lot of other big actors with slabs of forehead and a way with a threat, he tends to play a lot of unsettling or unstable roles.boardwalk empire box set (http://www.boardwalkempiredvd.us)
But here's what I most appreciate about Shannon's work with the writer-director Jeff Nichols: the subtlety. In Nichols' earlier film "Shotgun Stories," Shannon stretched out in a role containing hints and then realities of violence, but Shannon never played the ending of the movie in the earlier scenes. The character he created was a man of decent, honest confusion and contradiction. And in the enveloping strangeness of the new drama "Take Shelter," also written and directed by Nichols, Shannon's formidable presence never crowds the larger, scarier riddles underpinning this spare tale of one man's psychic suffocation.boardwalk empire season 2 dvd (http://www.boardwalkempiredvd.us)
